Eminem, who is a well known rapper, “helped” me adjust to a new life in Dubai, as I had recently moved there in 2008. His songs touched me, and made me feel more secure. He rapped, and I admired his hip-hop style, which definitely affected my lifestyle. Eminem’s lyrics seemed honest and very forcefully powerful, which indeed made me feel good. He rapped about life, political issues, and his personal life. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone. There was also a time in Dubai when I was interested in rock and roll. The fierce music, believe it or not, made me feel powerful. I was angry, and I channeled my anger through angry music. I could feel it in my bones.
Of course, trends disappear as fast as they appear. Eminem is still a well-known and successful rapper, but I am no longer into pop music or Eminem. Today, I have become very picky when it comes to music. I cannot bring myself to listen to just anything, and most often I find myself listening to religious music. Rap today also seems too mainstream. Rappers all rap about the same things just for money.
